Amber is a video game developer based in Bucharest, Romania, with additional offices in Botoșani, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Guadalajara, Montreal, Manila, and Kyiv. The company was founded in 2013 and, as of 2024, employs more than 800 people.[1][2]

History[edit]

Amber was founded in 2013 by Dragos Hancu.[3] The company has been involved in several projects, including the development of Cinderella Freefall for Disney.[1][4]

In 2016, Amber began developing its first original IP, a puzzle game called Link Twin. The game was released in August 2017.[1]

In 2017, Mihai Pohontu, formerly Vice President of Emerging Platforms at Samsung, joined Amber as CEO.[5]

In 2018, Amber launched Rumble Heroes, a real-time PvP game.[6]

In 2019, Amber opened a new studio in Botoșani, Romania.[7]

In 2020, Amber opened a support studio in Guadalajara, Mexico.[8]

In November 2020, Amber opened a new studio in Montreal.[9]

In 2021, Amber appointed Jaime Gine (formerly Chief Customer Officer at Keywords Studios) as its new CEO.[10] Also in 2021, Amber launched Tetris Beat, an Apple Arcade exclusive game.[11]

In June 2022, Amber announced the opening of a new office in Warsaw, Poland, and reported that in 2021 it generated $30.5 million in revenue, up 56% year-over-year.[12]

In September 2022, Amber received a minority investment from a fund advised by London-based Emona Capital LLP at a $190 million post-money valuation.[13]

In 2023, Amber reported that it generated $45 million in revenue and opened offices in Taipei, Taiwan, and Manila, Philippines.[14]

In 2024, Amber launched PAC-MAN Mega Tunnel Battle: Chomp Champs, developed by Amber and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment America.[15][16]

  • Selected as a finalist for Pocket Gamer's Mobile Games Awards "Best QA and Localisation Service Provider" in 2020.[17]
  • Selected as a finalist for Pocket Gamer's Mobile Games Awards "Best QA and Localisation Service Provider" and "Best Service Provider" in 2021, and won "Best QA and Localisation Service Provider" in the same year.[18][19][20]
  • Selected as a finalist for Pocket Gamer's Mobile Games Awards "Best QA and Localisation Service Provider" and "Best Service Provider" in 2022.[21]
  • Selected as a finalist for Pocket Gamer's Mobile Games Awards "Best QA and Localisation Service Provider" and "Best Service Provider" in 2023.[22]
