Summary

Description
English: The Mahalingeswara temple is a Shiva temples complex in Adoor village east of Kasaragod city in Kasaragod district of north Kerala and near Karnataka border. It is a historic Hindu site south of river Payaswini. It has an important 8th century inscription in Sanskrit language and Kannada script attributed to Kirtivarman II.

The temple is one of over fifteen historic apsidal plan Hindu temples known in Kerala. The main temple is three storeyed, with exquisite wood carvings, shrines to other Hindu deities, and murals that highlight Shiva, Vishnu, Devi and Surya traditions. It includes a square plan mandapa, and a small pushkarini. The site is famous for its annual multi-day Hindu festivals which include classical dance performances.

This Adoor temple site should not be confused with temple sites in another village also named Adoor that is in Pathanamthitta district of southeastern Kerala.
