Description

(left) The residence of United States Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes located at 1529 18th Street, NW in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C.
(right) The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) headquarters since 1979. The five-story, Classical Revival building was constructed in 1903. It is a contributing property to the Dupont Circle Historic District, with a 2009 property value of $6,733,700.

In addition to Hughes and the MAA, notable owners of the building have included the Cuban government (Office of Legation from 1915–1919; residence of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes y Quesada while serving as Cuban Minister Plenipotentiary), Frederic M. Sackett (residence from 1928–1929 while serving in the U.S. Senate), the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (headquarters during the 1950s), and the Association of the United States Army (headquarters from the 1950s–1970s).
