Summary
Description17th century mural at Jokhang Temple, Lhasa, showing Gushri Khan (l) and Sonam Chopel (r).jpg |
English: Detail from a 17th century mural at Jokhang Temple, Central Lhasa, Tibet showing the 5th Dalai Lama's military commander, the Mongolian Oirat Chieftain, Gushri Khan (1582-1655), (left) and the Dalai Lama's Chief Attendant, Manager and Prime Minister, Sonam Chopel (1595-1658), (right), also known up to 1642 as Sonam Rapten. NB: this image has also been uploaded to Wikimedia with erroneous captions, "Gushri Khan and The Fifth Dalai Lama" and "Gushri Khan and Desi Sangye Gyatso". Neither of these are possible given the Tibetan protocol that the subservient devotee Gushri Khan would not dare to proudly keep his fancy hat on while sitting with the bareheaded Dalai Lama; and neither would they ever be formally portrayed seated at the same level. As regards Desi Sangye Gyatso, he was only born just two years before Gushri died! |
