Summary

Description This a statue of Mohegan Medicine Woman Dr. Gladys Iola Tantaqudgeon on display at the Mohegan Tribal museum in Uncasville, CT on Nov. 19, 2013. Dr. Tantaqudgeon was born in 1899 and educated in tribal spirituality and herbalism by her grandmothers then studied anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. She received an honorary doctorate from the University of Connecticut and Yale University in 1994. In the 1990s, Dr. Tantaqudgeon’s personal records of correspondence regarding Mohegan births, graduations, marriages and deaths were critical to proving the Mohegan case for Federal Recognition in 1994. Some of Dr. Gladys Iola Tantaqudgeon’s list of accomplishments include: obtaining an Ivy League education as a non-white woman in the 1920s; co-founding Tantaquidgeon Museum in 1931; social work for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the mid-to-late 1930s; economic development work for the Indian Arts and Crafts Board, late 1930s and 1940s; preserving traditional Mohegan spirituality; writing on traditional Native herbal remedies; working to save traditional Native ceremonies and art forms; preserving the meaning of traditional Mohegan symbols; and passing on and recording old Native American stories.
