Summary

Description
English: Personnel from 9 Sqn Support Troop, 23 Para Engineer Regiment and Joint Helicopter Support Squadron rig an Underslung Load (USL) for lifting by a Chinook Helicopter.

Engineers must keep up their training rigging USL and this training session was to be lifted by an RAF Odiham based Chinook flown by an 18 Squadron crew. It was also useful training for the Chinook crew to experience lifting a particularly heavy load and observing the flying characteristics of the JCB.

The equipment being lifted as Under Slung Loads (USL) consisted of a large JCB digger weighing 9000 kg and a Motorised Roller (Wacker) weighing 2.5 tons.

Both of these are essential pieces of equipment used by the Royal Engineers for construction in the field, including airstrip and landing site preparation used by military fixed wing and rotary craft.
