It is due to the reader of a new work on a sub-ject already so often handled as the Life of Shake-speare to tell him at the outset what he may expectto find therein, and to state the reasons for whichI have thought it worth while to devote nearly tenyears to its production. Previous investigators- havewith industrious minuteness already ascertainedfor us every detail that can reasonably be expectedof Shakespeares private life. With laboriousresearch they have raked together the records ofpetty debts, of parish assessments, of scandaloustraditions, of idle gossip; and they have shownbeyond doubt that Shakespeare was born at Strat-ford-on-Avon, was married, had three children, lefthis home, made money as an actor and play-makerin London, returned to his native town, invested hissavings there, and died.
