Summary

Description
English: Aignish memorial This cairn, designed by Will Maclean and built by Jim Crawford, a local stonemason, commemorates the raid on Aignish Farm in 1888 by local people. The explanatory plaque close to the cairn states:

"This cairn was erected in memory of the men and women of Point who raided the farm at Aignish on January 9th 1888. They did so because they were driven beyond endurance by destitution and oppression. Instead of acting to relieve their distress the authorities used the majesty of the law and the armed might of the military to crush the people.

13 of the Raiders were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 6 months to 15 months.

Though the people failed to hold the farm they succeeded in bringing their desperate situation to the attention of a wide audience, but it was a later generation that reaped the benefit of their effort when, in 1905, the farm was officially broken up into crofts."
