Summary

Description
English: An example of modernist architecture in Derby Debenhams' soon to be vacated store on Victoria Street is a classic example of modernist architecture displaying a beautiful concave curve on its main frontage (accompanied by a convex curve on the Green Lane corner). Built between 1960 and 1962 as Ranby's department store it demonstrates that retail properties need not be unsightly. It is a credit to the architects, Evans, Cartwright and Woollatt. Debenhams is soon to relocate to the monstrous carbuncle that is the new Westfield Centre. It is a great shame that Westfield's architects and Derby's planning department did not take note of what is possible with a little vision!
