Robert John Verney, 17th Baron Willoughby de Broke (1809–1862) (born "Robert John Barnard") was the son of Rev. Robert Barnard (1760-1834), Prebendary of Winchester (2nd son of Rev. Thomas Barnard, Rector of Withersfield in Suffolk, son of Rev. Thomas Barnard, headmaster of Leeds Grammar School ("Barnard of Bartlow", A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry, Volume 1, By John Burke, Bernard Burke)), by his wife Louisa Verney, sister and in her issue heiress of Henry Peyto-Verney, 16th Baron Willoughby de Broke (1773–1852).
