Summary

Description
English: Phi Sigma Kappa's Beta Deuteron chapter at the University of Minnesota, for use on the Phi Sigma Kappa page. Photo circa 1933, from chapter historical archives.

This photograph was taken as part of a set of insurance photos shortly after the building was completed. Built in 1929, the contractor was the Minneapolis firm, The Lovering Co., (later, Lovering & Sons), whose principals had been members of the chapter more than a decade prior. Built in the Elizabethan Revival style, the building is a masterpiece, utilizing pre-stressed concrete floors and walls early after the introduction of these advanced techniques and materials. The building was designed in 1928 by architect K. Worthen.

In a 4-page summary article of the architectural gems on the University of Minnesota campus, author Bruce N. Wright describes the building: "The entry sits back from the front of the building, fieldstone covers the ground floor and entry approach, the windows are diamond-paned, leaded-casement style, the upper floors are half-timbered, and the roof is slate. Altogether, the effect is of a romantic English-country manor home." (Bruce N. Wright (November–December 1994). "School Days". Architecture Minnesota: 24-27.)
