Summary
| Description | Detail from Bishop Peter Courtenay's Mantelpiece (c.1480?), Bishop's Palace, Exeter. Arms of Courtenay of Powderham impaling Hungerford (arms of the father and mother of Bishop Peter Courtenay (d.1492)). Supporters: two Courtenay boars each charged with a label of 3 points each point charged with 3 roundels. On a scroll above: "Honor deo et regi" (honour to God and the king); on a scroll below: "Arma p(at)rib(us) et matris" (The arms of his (fore)fathers and mother). In the 4 spandrels are the heraldic badges of the Hungerford family: a garb (wheatsheaf) (Pevrell garb) and 3 conjoined sickles. The left border contains 3 tau crosses from each of which hang a bell, symbols of St Anthony of Egypt, a favourite saint of the bishop (See: Rev. George Oliver, Lives of the Bishops of Exeter and a History of the Cathedral, Exeter, 1861, pp.255-257) and in reference to his office as Master of St. Anthony's Hospital, St Benet Fink in the City of London. In 1883 no traces of colouring survived, thus the present colourings are modern.
