English: Boundary stone, Tomgill Bridge. An old boundary stone on the southern edge of Aysgarth parish. The inscription appears to say 'HERE ENDS AYSGARTH ROAD' with a date that probably reads as 1833. The right hand edge bears the name 'Middleham', but the other edge is too worn to read.
This is an intriguing stone which might possibly mark the end of the section of road for which the village of Aysgarth was responsible. Such stones need preserving before they decay or are taken as garden ornaments. |
