Description
English: Monumental brass in St Bartholomew's Church, Yealmpton, Devon, inscribed in verse to Isabel Fortescue (d.1580) wife of John Copleston of Bowden, Yealmpton. John Copleston (born 1508[1]), son and heir, of Bowden, who married Isabella Fortescue (d. 3 September 1580[2]), third daughter of Henry Fortescue of Preston, in the parish of Newton Ferrers, Devon, by his wife Elisabeth St Maur, a daughter of William St Maur lord of the manor of North Molton, Devon.[3] A monumental brass survives in St Bartholomew's Church, Yealmpton, inscribed to Isabella Fortescue in verse in Gothic script, revealing the dates of her death and burial and her parentage, as follows:[4]

Thrice shined September sunne fyve hundred yeares thrice spent,
And foure times twenty were since Christ to Earth was sent,
When Isabell the wief of Copleston deare did dye,
The third day buried thence nowe here in tumbe doth lye,
To Henry Ffortescue thirde daughter by degree,
And Agnes eake hir mother's name of Sainctmawres blode was she.
