Summary

Description

This is a plot showing changes in preferred usage of the terms "cluster roots" versus "proteoid roots", in papers reported by Google Scholar. "Proteoid roots" was the original name, since these roots were originally discovered in the Proteaceae, and are most common in that family. However these roots have now been found in at least seven other plant families, and so some researchers felt "proteoid roots" was a misnomer, and adopted "cluster roots" instead.

This plot shows that usage of "proteoid roots" was fairly stable at around double that of "cluster roots" until about 1999. Since 1999, preference for "cluster roots" has been steadily increasing at a rate of over 3% per year. It has been the preferred term since around 2005, and is now used around twice as often as "proteoid roots".
