  • Obverse shows the coat of arms of the USSR, the Russian text for "USSR" (СССР), the mass of silver in the coin in grams (31,1), the metallic composition and millesimal fineness of the coin (Ag 900), the coin's denomination of 3 rubles (3 РУБЛЯ), and mintage year of the coin (1990), and the mintmark of the Leningrad mint (stylized "ЛМД").
  • Reverse shows Captain Cook and expedition party on Unalaska Island, text "250 YEARS OF DISCOVERY OF RUSSIAN AMERICA" in Russian (250 ЛЕТ ОТКРЫТИЯ РУССКОЙ АМЕРИКИ) on the coin's upper rim, text "EXPEDITION OF D. COOK IN RUSSIAN AMERICA" in Russian (ЭКСПЕДИЦИЯ Д.КУКА В РУССКУЮ АМЕРИКУ) on the coin's lower rim.
