Summary

Description
English: French lithography purporting to depict the swearing-in ceremony at the château of Saint-Cloud near Paris on 19 July 1806, the day the treaty establishing the Confederation of the Rhine was ratified. On the platform, behind Napoleon, is his foreign minister Talleyrand (wearing a white wig). Standing up in the middle are the 16 rulers who joined the Confederation at its inception. The portly man in the foreground is King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria. This propaganda engraving does not reflect reality since the rulers of Bavaria, Württemberg and Baden had sent envoys and were not present at the ceremony.
