Summary
オウレンとはキンポウゲ科の植物の一種。学名Coptis japonica。
北海道、本州、四国の山地の木陰に自生する多年生草本。薬用植物のため栽培もされる。花期は3～4月頃で小さな白い花を咲かせる。
生薬 [編集]
本種、同属のC. chinensis、C. deltoidea、C. deltoideaの根をほとんど取り除いた根茎は黄連（オウレン）という生薬で、苦味健胃、整腸、止瀉等の作用がある。この生薬には抗菌作用、抗炎症作用等があるベルベリン（berberine）というアルカロイドが含まれている。
黄連湯、黄連解毒湯、三黄丸、三黄瀉心湯、温清飲などの漢方方剤に使われる。
