Summary

Description
English: Derwentwater Chambers, Sandhill. Sandhill is a very old area of Newcastle formed at the entry point to the town from the south, via firstly the Roman bridge, and later, the Medieval bridge. The Swing Bridge now occupies their approximate previous location. The street retains the finest group of timber-framed houses in Northumberland and Durham, dating from the 1650s. These include Bessie Surtees House 1734906 and this one opposite the Guildhall 668121 These were built as houses for wealthy merchants with their expense shown by their long windows, multiply divided into small panes.
