Summary

Description
English: Engine Houses at The Crowns. These engine houses were part of the Botallack mine. The lower engine house was the first to be built around 1819 (although it was rebuilt in 1835 to house a larger engine). It housed a pumping engine to keep the mine free of water. Siting the engine house here instead of at the top of the cliff saved the time it would have taken to dig a shaft down to this level. The upper engine house was called Pearce's Whim (a whim is a winding engine) and was used to haul ore up the Boscawen diagonal shaft which extended about half a mile out to sea and to a depth of about 250 fathoms.
