Summary

Description
English: Eunoia, 2020 threads together over 250 separate pieces of stained and satin glass components into the upright cylindrical form you see here. Suspended from ceiling to floor using high-tensile strength threads Eunoia is inspired by the geometric patterning found within Māori weaving traditions. The red weaving lines visible across the structure are symbolic of whakapapa (genealogical) lines. The red, black and white colouring represents concepts related to Māori creation narratives. Te Rongo Kirkwood explains:

I am using black glass to pick up on the notion of pure potentiality sitting in behind the concept of whakapapa – the emergence out of the stages of night into the light of creation referenced in the use of white glass.

Eunoia is conceptualised as a threshold between the states of Ira Atua (the realm of the gods) and Ira Tangata (the realm of humankind). It is a bold and commanding work that considers our relationship to the physical and metaphysical realms of Māori knowledge and cultural belief.
