Summary

Description
English: Excavations behind the Radcliffe Infirmary This view south from the Radcliffe Observatory shows the site recently excavated by the Museum of London prior to development of this area between Woodstock Road and Walton Street. The original Radcliffe Infirmary (no longer a hospital) can be seen standing between the hospital chapel (left) and St Aloysius' church (right)

Remains of three large Bronze Age barrows and ring ditches have been located, together with evidence of Saxon settlement as well as structural and horticultural evidence associated with the grounds of both the 18th/early19th century Infirmary and the adjoining Radcliffe Observatory. These include human remains from the hospital burial ground and a large number of chamber pots.

The green domed roof in the foreground is the old Observatory's heliometer, used for measuring the variation of the sun's diameter at different seasons of the year.
