Summary

Description

Faience 'was'-sceptre of Thuthmosis III (Acc. 1033)

The upper part of a was-sceptre, made of faience with black decoration. The was-sceptre was a long staff topped (as depicted held by the gods) with the stylised head of an animal (possibly a jackal) and was an important symbol of kingship.

On the neck of the sceptre, before it breaks off, is the cartouche of king Thutmose III.

25.3 x 2.7 18th Dynasty Naqada, Upper Egypt

Acquisition: Haworth, Mr Jesse (Donation, 1895-1896)

It is presumed that this piece was discovered during the 1894-5 Naqada excavation by Petrie and Quibbell.
