Summary

Description

This wonderful Lawrence shot is at Bray Head - but what is going on here and when did it all take place?

While it was quickly established that the catalogue is correct, and this is Naylor's Cove, with the town of Bray visible in the background, we did not immediately confirm a date and info on the event pictured. Following early suggestions however from [/photos/patvic67/ patrick.vickers1] and [/photos/129555378@N07/ sharon.corbet], [/photos/gnmcauley/ Niall Mccauley] offered strong evidence that the image is from one of Bray's August regattas between 1907 and 1914!

Thanks also to [/photos/91549360@N03/ O Mac] for information on the railway line in the foreground, and to [/photos/kestrelsprite/ KestrelSprite], [/photos/gnmcauley/ Niall] and [/photos/eyelightfilms/ eyelightfilms] for the discussion on the Drumm Battery Train which ran on the line.

(Not related, but as a reminder, a repeat from the "Tríd an Lionsa" series will show tonight 10 Nov 2015 at 9pm on TG4. Also available on their catch-up player, the latest episode involves collections and colleagues from Library Towers...)

Photographer: Robert French

Collection: The Lawrence Photograph Collection

Date: c.1865-1914 (likely 1907-1914 based on key buildings pictured in background)
