(James Laidley is noted for the range of positions he held in British colonial governments around the world. He was appointed a deputy Assistant Commissary General in 1810 and served in the Peninsular War before being promoted in 1814 and moving to the West Indies. Following this, he worked briefly in Canada before taking up the position of Deputy Commissary General and Head of the Commissariat Department in Mauritius in 1825. In 1827, with the same title he would move to New South Wales where he held this position for the eight years up to his death. The obituary which accompanies this work makes clear the high esteem with which Laidley was held.)
