Kojiro Matsukata son of Count Matsukata, entered Rutgers College in 1885 through the Rutgers College Grammar School. While at Rutgers College, he was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity and a member of the freshman football team, as pictured here. He went on to study at Yale and travel the world studying the practice of shipbuilding. Upon returning to Japan, he served as chairman of the Kobe Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Kobe House of Representatives. He married the daughter of Viscount Kuki in December of 1897. Kojiro became president and owner of the Kawasaki Dockyard Company, one of the largest shipbuilding plants in the world. He served as secretary to his father during his term as Prime Minister of the Japanese Empire. Kojiro's wealth enabled him to become a patron and a major collector of art from around the world.
