Summary

Description

International Development Minister Lynne Featherstone launches 16 days of activism for the elimination of violence against women with the Minister of Gender and Child Development, Inonge Wina MP, in Zambia on Wednesday, 28 November 2012.

Zambia ranks 131 out of 146 countries in the Gender Inequality Index. Seats held by women in parliament have decreased from 14% in 2008 to 11% in 2011 - and only 6% of local councillors are women.

In the last year, there have been encouraging signs of growing government commitment to gender equality though with the previous Gender in Development Division (GIDD) becoming a fully-fledged ministry - the Ministry of Gender and Child Development (MGCD).

UK aid is supporting programmes in Zambia to eliminate violence against women and girls, including the Stamping Out and Prevention of Gender-based Violence inititative (STOP-GBV). This includes a one stop shop in which victims can access medical, psycho-social and legal support, as well as working on prevention and advocacy.
