Description

Town Hall, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Designed by Cuthbert Brodrick, built 1853-1858. The tympanum of the front door was sculpted by Thomas of London. The exterior of the building has a number of architectural carvings by Robert Mawer, Catherine Mawer and William Ingle, although Catherine was credited with the work by 1858. The heads were described as masks in the 1850s, but they represent various ancient Greek mythological characters, and are also portraits of contemporary people.

This is a keystone head by William Ingle, in the form of a sheep's head representing the fleece. The fleece is a symbol of the wool trade.
