Summary

Description
English: Māori Hostel at Mechanics Bay Auckland, 1860. Hostel owned by Ihaka Takaanini. Discrimination by Pākehā meant that Māori struggled to find accommodation in Auckland. The government attempted to combat this issue by building 'native hostels' where Māori could stay for free. There are waka (canoes) beached in the foreground.
