Summary

Description

On November 3 1924 Mangahao Hydro-Electric Power Station became operational. The Mangahao Power Station was the first of many large hydro power stations to be built in New Zealand under a Government resourced plan to provide a national supply of electricity. Earlier hydro power stations, such as Waipori for Dunedin, Coleridge for Christchurch, and Horahora for Waihi mining had been initiated locally.

The Power Station is located near the town of Shannon. It makes use of Mangahao River, through a series of tunnels and pipelines totalling 4.8 kilometres, in the Tararua Ranges. The first supply from the station went to the local Horowhenua area. Coverage was soon extended 100 km to Wellington by duplicate 110KV lines, followed by similar lines to Bunnythorpe near Palmerston North for supply to the Manawatu. Mangahao Power Station became the power station for Wellington, Horowhenua, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, and the Wairarapa.

The item shown is a Souvenir Pamphlet produced by the Public Works Department to mark the official opening of the power station.
