Summary[edit]

First page of Il Manifesto of April 20, 2005 describing the new elected Pope Benedict XVI as The German Shepherd

Translation of the first lines:

The German Shepherd
Joseph Ratzinger, as foreseen and feared, was immediately elected to the pontifical throne, already in the second day of the conclave. Wojtyła's perfect heir, custodian of orthodoxy, he collected the cardinals' compact vote and the square's lukewarm applause. With him, rigid and orthodox but no crowd master, the Church chooses isolation.
