Description
English: Captain Melville Raymond Portal, Loyal North Lancs Regiment who died for his country at Kampala in Uganda while serving under his brother Gerald. Eldest son of Melville and Lady Charlotte Portal of Laverstoke Hants. Born 9 October 1856. Educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford. Died 27 May 1893.

Sir Gerald Herbert Portal C.B. K.C.M.G. Diplomatist. Administrator. Explorer. Who displayed in his brief career the resolution, the wisdom and the heroic courage by which empires are built by and by which alone they can be sustained. Second son of Melville and Lady Charlotte Portal of Laverstoke, Hants. Born 13 March 1858. Educated at Eton, Special Envoy to Abyssinia 1887, Consul General at Zanzibar 1891 Commissioner in East Africa and Head of the Mission to Uganda 1892. Died 25 January 1894.

The memorial is by the sculptor Waldo Story.
