The total annualcatch of cod in North American waters (including thosetaken on the Banks) by French, American, Canadianand Newfoundland fishermen, is estimated at nearly4,000,000 quintals, and allowing 50 fish to a quintal, thismeans 200,000,000 taken every year. Yet so prolific isthe fishery that it has withstood this enormous drain forcenturies. Indeed, the catch in Newfoundland in 1908was by far the largest ever obtained, the export totalling1,732,387 quintals, nearly twenty per cent, more thanany previous years. Until 1890, the fisheries were conducted withoutany efficient administration, but a Fisheries Commissionwas then organized, and the services of an able scientistas Superintendent of Fisheries were secured. Theartificial propagation of cod and lobsters was begun, andmodern methods were adopted.
