Description

"THE HIGH" OXFORD.

A very competent critic has declared that the High Street of Oxford is the finest thoroughfare in Europe; and all who are familiar with it will be inclined to endorse his verdict. We here ace a portion of this noble street. On the right is to be seen the church of All Saints, in the distance; in the centre is St. Mary's, the famous University church, conspicuous by its beautiful and elaborate spire. The low hat tie men ted building; on the same side is tho front of All Souls' College, the name of which commemorates the great victory of Agincourt, its chapel having been built as a memorial of those who fell "upon St. Crispin's day." On the left of the picture is seen University College, the most ancient foundation in the University, whose foundation or restoration its members love to assign to the pious zeal of King Alfred, the greatest and best of our Saxon kings.
