Summary

Description
English: First United Methodist Church, 168 Main Street at Chapel Street, Penn Yan, New York, March 2022. Dating to c. 1896, this handsome edifice of rough-hewn Medina sandstone was the work of local architect Jacob Allington and is described by the state Division for Historic Preservation as "a good example of the Romanesque Revival style with its round arches, multiple spires, and rosette window". The spires in particular are an eye-catching detail, especially on the corner tower, where the main steeple is surrounded by a quarter of stout cone-shaped spires, with unusual crenellation ringing the one on the outermost corner which is attached to a corbelled turret. Underneath the belfry is an unusual round-arched stained-glass window with tracery in a diaper pattern. Originally known as the First Union Congregational Church, the congregation was founded in 1841 by the abolitionist faction of the local Presbyterian Church which had recently split over the question of slavery. This is the second building to house the flock.
