Description
Renoir depicts Ambroise Vollard as a connoisseur, examining a statuette of a kneeling female nude from Aristide Maillol. The theme echoes portraits of a collector from the Italien Renaissance. Vollard's features are somewhat idealised: he was a big, heavy man mocked for his bald head and bulbous nose.
