Summary

Description
English: Criteria for naming RIKEN clones. The aim of FANTOM1 was to name each RIKEN clone based on its similarity to a reference sequence of a known gene. Because clones may map to multiple genes, they devised a hierarchical criteria for naming genes. The hierarchy for naming clones based on sequence similarity is as follows: identical to mouse (mouse gene) > similar to mouse (similar to gene name) > similar to other mammals (homologue to gene name) > similar to non-mammals (related gene). For clones that lack sequence similarity, the hierarchy is as follows: predicted protein motif > protein coding potential + expressed sequence tag (EST) from mouse/human/rat (hypothetical protein) > only EST hits (unclassified protein) > no EST hits (unclassifiable). This figure was inspired by Kawai et al., (2001; https://www.nature.com/articles/35055500), and by the RIKEN definition description provided on the FANTOM website (http://fantom.gsc.riken.jp/2/doc/introduction.html) .
