Summary

Description Roman Catholic High School at 301 N. Broad Street on the corner of Vine Street in the Callowhill neighborhood of Philadelphia was founded in 1890 as the Roman Catholic High School for Boys. Thomas E. Cahill, an entrepreneur and philanthropist who came from a poor family of immigrants, left the greatest part of his estate to provide for the founding of the school, which was the first free Catholic high school in the United States. The building, which is faced with marble and stands on a granite foundation, originally has a 150 foot marble tower, which burned down in 1959. (Source: Historical marker on site and school website)
