English: The Silver Lifesaving Medal of the Massachusetts Humane Society issued 1884. After 1849, it was the custom of the Humane Society to present their new Silver Medal, as the equivalent of the Gold Medal of former times, when the resurer showed uncommon courage and perseverance in saving human life at the risk of hiw own. The Massachusetts Humane Society became the model for the United States Life-Saving Service funded by Congress in 1848 and operated by the United States Coast Guard since 1915.
