Summary

Description
English: The precipitous and dreaded Gantouw Pass through the adjoining kloof to the north formed the original route to the Overberg and the eastern interior. In 1828 the Governor, Sir Lowry Cole, instructed the surveyor-general C.C. Mitchell to construct an improved pass over the Hottentots-Holland Mountains. Soldiers and convicts were engaged in the construction which was named after the Governor and was originally opened in 6 July 1830. National Monuments Council 1986
