Summary

Description
English: Site of Stewart Bridge, Portsmouth to Arundel Canal. The inscription is actually from the site of another bridge 138575, one of seven swing bridges that crossed the former Portsmouth and Arundel Canal. The canal was first proposed during the Napoleonic Wars in order to link Portsmouth with Chatham in Kent to enable the navy to move supplies between the two naval ports without harrasment from the French. However, it was only started in 1818 and completed in 1823. By then the wars were long finished and the route no longer needed. The canal struggled until its owners went bankrupt and it was finally closed in 1849. The only surviving part is the link from Chichester Harbour to Chichester, the rest is now dry or built over. This view looks west from the outhouses of Barnham Court Farm.
