DescriptionSouth Australian Railways 780 class steel car no 783 converted for use with vice-regal car.jpg
English: South Australian Railways 780 class steel car no 783 after conversion to a head-end power and crew car mainly for VIP trains. It was known as "the Commissioner's power car".
It was converted in 1973 to be attached to, and provide power for, the Vice-Regal car (used by the Governor of South Australia) and the South Australian Railways Commissioner's car, Murray – and on occasions, an RBJ class (buffet) car on The Overland. It was painted Regal Red on the body, silver on the roof, and black on the underframe and concertina end connections.
The car was fitted out with a kitchen and sleeping compartments for eight people. It was not air conditioned; it was fitted with an under-floor alternator set to provide power to itself and one other vehicle. The bogies fitted to the car were originally used under the Cafeteria Car, but had become surplus when that vehicle was fitted with Commonwealth style cast steel bogies.
