Summary

Description

This beautiful red brick building on South Great Georges Street in Dublin's southside is the subject of todays image. With turrets and "Rapunzel" towers at strategic places, it is a veritable fairy castle.

As we were certain of location on this one, community efforts focused today on narrowing the catalogue date range, and digging-out some extra info on the main subject (the market and retail buildings pictured and the signs adorning it). On the date, and with thanks in particular to [/photos/91549360@N03/ O Mac], [/photos/129555378@N07/ sharon.corbet] and [/photos/johnspooner/ John Spooner] it seems that the date range can be dramatically refined to a few years in the mid-1890s. Among the various contributions on the subject, [/photos/johnspooner/ John Spooner;s] extract from the Freeman's Journal gives some context to the "Rill-Tip Tea" sign and the Valentine & Co shop it adorned:

Our advertising columns contain the prospectus of the Rill-Tip, Limited, tea merchants, which is an amalgamation of the Valentine and Co and the Indian Tea Estates Stores, at present carrying on business as wholesale and retail tea merchants at the following places - 6 castle place, 121 Divis street, 155 and1 57 Shankill road, in the city of Belfast; and also at 24 South Great-George's street in the city of Dublin; and Broadway, Ballymena, in the county of Antrim. (Freeman's Journal, 14 August 1894)
