Summary

Description

A truly awful picture taken in 1959 with a Conway 120 Box camera and reproduced here from an enprint. I have included this photograph in the set to show the Lane in happier days. The Kent Coast Electrification scheme is now in full swing and many of the old steam services are now in the hands of EMUs. Stewarts Lane has lost its allocation of 'King Arthurs' 'Merchant Navys' and 'Schools', athough examples of the latter showed up quite regularly. Many other types have also disappeared or been drastically reduced in numbers. In this view, an unrebuilt Battle of Britain pacific is taking on a last gulp of water before backing to Victoria for its waiting boat train working to Folkestone. Examples of the new electric locomotives can be seen in the electric depot shed together with one or two older 'Hornby' type locomotives. The E1 0-6-0 tank engine coming down the slope from Factory Junction, has been on a shunting expedition to Herne Hill sidings. Note the narrow bodied 'Hastings' line stock in the carriage siding to the left of the tank engine, and in the further distance Factory Junction Signal Box can be seen.

Camera: Conway Box 120.
