Summary

Description
English: Teston, St Peter & St Paul: Ramsay monument A monument on the outside wall of the church to James Ramsay, former Vicar of the parish and campaigner against the slave trade, who died in the Revolutionary year of 1789. The full text of the monument, in typically florid 18th century style, reads: "While firm integrity, unaffected zeal for the public good, steady contempt of self interest, tender attention to each social duty, benevolence to the whole human race, and humble piety to God are held in estimation: the memory of the Rev'd JAMES RAMSAY (whose earthly reliques are here deposited) will claim respect, mingled with sorrow that his labours were no longer spared to the poor, the friendless and the oppressed, for each of whom of whatever clime or colony his Christian Love and generous exertions nor disappointment could exhaust, calumny slacken or persecution abate. He died the 20th July 1789, Et. [aged] 56"
