Summary

Description
English: A tethered balloon used by the allies to survey the terrain around Humaitá during the Paraguayan war. The balloon was tethered by three manilla ropes each held by a team of 10 men. The apparatus on the foreground is for making hydrogen. To save gas, the balloon was only partly deflated between uses and kept in the stake corral in the centre. This balloon and its fellow were brought to South America by the Allen brothers, veteran balloonists of the American Civil War.
