Summary

Description

Venus has been spectacular in the evening sky lately, the brighter of a pair of stars seen at dusk (the other is Jupiter). In this mosaic of images from the Venus Express orbiter, we see the planet as viewed in infrared (shown here as red) and ultraviolet light.

The bright areas on the infrared side represent the temperatures at the cloud tops (dark regions are cooler). The oval feature is the giant eye of the vortex at the planet’s south pole. The structure measures about 2000 km across, rotating around the pole in about two-and-a-half days. The atmosphere rotates counterclockwise in this view.
