Summary[edit]

Media data and Non-free use rationale
Description Illustration The Hoard by Pauline Baynes for J. R. R. Tolkien's 1962 The Adventures of Tom Bombadil. She told Tolkien that it was her favourite among the book's illustrations; she learnt only much later that he had been disappointed by the illustration, as he felt that the dragon would not be facing away from the cave's mouth, nor would the knight be without either shield or helmet.[1][2]

Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) Pauline Baynes
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) As explained in the article and in the file description here, the image is significant in two ways. It was Baynes's favourite among her Bombadil images; and Tolkien disliked it, as he felt that both figures in the image were implausible. Having the image in the article allows the reader to judge why Baynes and Tolkien each felt as they did, and to reach their own conclusion as to its merits as an illustration.

This exact image is required by the cited text.
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) The image is used only here. It's the only example of her work from inside The Adventures of Tom Bombadil anywhere on Wikipedia, and the only instance of her work for Tolkien's books in the article.
Respect for
commercial opportunities
(WP:NFCC#2)
It's most unlikely at this distance in time, and the image is already available on the web (such as at the source above) at much better resolution.
