FIRST PERIOD — 58 — CASTLE SWIN Isles, and is said to have been built by her after her separation from herhusband, in the middle of the fourteenth century. (See also Borve.) Butalthough doubtless occupied, and peihaps added to, by her, it is evidentlya structure of an earlier time, and corresponds in its main features withthe other castles of the first period in the isles. The wall of enceinte(Fig. 17), like that of Mingarry and Kismull, is of an irregular form, beingconstructed so as to fit the site on which it stands. This wall is for themost part ancient, but the north-eastern portion, which is thinner thanthe remainder, has possibly been rebuilt. The entrance doorway is in thenorth wall. It is small, like those of Mingarry and Kismull, and has along narrow passage through the wall, while a wide machicolation corbelledout on the exterior defends it from above.
