Summary

Description On July 26, Ambassador Daniel Shapiro visited and toured the Hadera Desalination Plant, the newest and most modern desalination facility in Israel, and the leading desalination plant in the world. During the visit, the Ambassador learned more about Israel’s strategic decision in 1999 to develop a large scale desalination program which today contributes nearly 50 percent of the potable water used in Israeli households. The head of Israel’s Desalination Program, Abraham Tenne, and the Exceutive VP of Special Projects Hadera plant, Fredi Lokiec, provided the Ambassador with a strategic overview of Israel’s future plans for desalination and led a tour of the plant’s key facilities. At the end of the tour, the Ambassador had the opportunity to sample a glass of high quality drinking water which only 90 minutes earlier had been salty sea water. Ambassador Shapiro commended Israel for its impressive technology and urged Israeli water officials to continue their constructive engagement in the region on desalination training under the auspices of the multilateral MEDRC (Middle East Desalination Research Center) program in which the U.S. plays a leading role.
